Don’t Let an Irregular Heartbeat Go Undiagnosed

Atrial fibrillation, also known as AFib or AF or a “racing heart,” is an irregular heartbeat that causes the upper chambers of the heart to function ineffectively, leading to potential blood clots, heart failure and stroke.

The condition affects nearly 3 million people in the United States.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Symptoms of AFib include:

  • irregular heartbeat

  • heart palpitations (rapid or pounding)

  • dizziness

  • fatigue

  • shortness of breath

  • chest pain

The condition is normally diagnosed by a doctor during a physical exam. Your doctor may use heart scans, blood tests, x-rays, a heart monitor or other methods to determine if you have AFib.

Once diagnosed, treatment may vary depending on several factors. In addition to receiving targeted remedies such as medications and possibly surgeries, patients can benefit from staying active, eating healthy and making other good lifestyle choices.

Reduce your risk

To help reduce your risk of AFib and its subsequent health problems, follow these lifestyle recommendations:

  • Control high blood pressure by reducing sodium intake and taking medications as prescribed.

  • Maintain a healthy weight by reducing sugar intake and remaining active.

  • Don’t smoke.

  • Limit alcohol consumption.

  • Receive regular physical examinations from your doctor to identify potential health problems early.
